the city worked through the night on repairs. wheeling in truckloads of sandbags. by christmas day hundreds lined the levee as more rain set in. even more sandbags were seen stacked outside of homes mixed in with holiday decorations. >> how high tide is coming. >> kids wake up thinking they'll have to help their parents clean out their front yards and clean up the cars. they want to go outside and play with their gifts. >> reporter: people who live in this house were forced to spend christmas away from home. their house is unsafe because electrical outlets were affected. today they stayed low. the city is working with engineers on a long term solution and a project to increase the capacity of the creek should begin next year. until then, residents will be keeping a close eye on the levee. >> we had a bad christmas. so we was ready to let it go and not think about it any more. move on with life. >> aside from the sandbags crews excavated the areas around the leaks and refilled them. behind me is the creek. we've been keeping a close eye on it tonight. the water levels have remained

francisco southeast and looks like the 101, daly city, oakland, san leandro, the unstable wet weather air mass won't leave. cool breezy this afternoon and a short break tomorrow. once again it's going to be brief and then more rain returning for the end of the week. staying cool showers, bring the umbrella. once again all day long the cold front is moving farther in land but we still have unstable air behind it. we'll see pockets of sunshine and pockets of heavier rain continuing through the afternoon. and then finally by the evening, that's when things finally start to clear out. wednesday we start to see more partly cloudy skies. should remain that way overnight. we have a winter storm warning in effect in the sierra. up to 2 feet of snow and gusty winds. chains required on all highways in the area. low to mid-50s this afternoon. 54 concord. 55 oakland. seven-day forecast, here's a look at the dry break and then showers continue friday into saturday. sunday through new year's day looks dry. let's talk traffic right now. we'll take you outside live towards 101. we sent our photograph

powerlines down, roof damage and it is just hours after the storm ripped through the city. >> volatile conditions as tornadoes toucheddown around mobile. >> i was screams and hollaring, and i was just scared to death. >> we ran into the cooler, got all of the employees in the cooler, and it came right over us. >> it blew the roofs off of homes, and on this christmas day, not even a house of worship was safe. the front wall was torn off. >> look at that tornado. >> across much of the south, many spent christmas in the dark as twisters came through. >>> tornado winds in mississippi damaged homes, and two men were killed from falling trees. >> it's a mess. >> as a funnel cloud came from mobile joe michael love shot this video from his home. >> what was that? >> that's transformers. >> i'm at my son's high school it's pretty destroyed. all of the portable classrooms are gone. >> reporter: and no serious injuries reported here but it is daylight and crews are now back out assessing the situation. >> thank you, the rough weather is affecting travel across the country. more than 500 flights w

fransesquito creek. crews from the city and california conservation corps spent a lot of christmas stacking sandbags on the levee to keep the creek out of gardens neighborhood. there's already been some flooding from ver buena verbena drive to areas in the neighborhood. it made for a less than happy christmas. >> kids didn't wake up in the morning thinking they have to help their parents clean up the yards and cars. >> people were evacuated from one unsafe home because water got into the electrical outlets. east palo alto is working on a long-term solution to the flooding. >>> the storm has dumped a lot of snow in the sierra. not everyone felt like fighting the traffic and chain controls to get up there. some bay area families decided to head out right after opening their presents and play in the first snow they found. >> 6:00 in the morning got all our stuff and food and came out at 9:00. >> looks like fun. there's more snow than usual this winter. the california department of water resources said there's been 140% increase in this year's snowpack. remember, you can track the storm yoursel

south, and shrouded the city of atlanta in fog. at least two reported tornadoes touched down in the houston area. one man was killed when a toppled tree flattened his pickup truck. by mid-afternoon, nearly 70,000 people in the houston area were without power. meteorologist david bernard says it's only going to get worse. >> this is a wide-ranging storm, as far as impacts go. there's a tornado threat in the south all the way into the southeast for tomorrow. north of that, arkansas into tennessee, indiana, parts of missouri and even into ohio, the threat will be for blizzard conditions developing later tonight and tomorrow. >> reporter: and all that bad weather is tracking east, with the bulk of it hitting the northeast by wednesday night. nm? >> thanks, michelle. police are learning more about what led to the ambush of four firemen yesterday in webster, ebstyork. there is a memorial outside the firehouse to michael chip rene and thomas kaczowka. they were shot and killed by the gunman william spengler, who later killed himself. he left a rambling note in which he said he wanted to se

rematch of last season's finals. oklahoma city and miami. miami got the win by the way, 103-97. lebron james assisting on the court. >>> a christmas eve sendoff for recovering sea lion in marin county. the marine mammal center released kiki on rodeo beach monday. as you can see, he couldn't wait to get out of the crate and head into the water. workers rescued the sea lion near monterey last week. he was lethargic, malnourished and bite marks on his neck. that's why frank's not here this morning. some area, there is seepage and the appearance of what is called boil in the city by adds concerns. >> we know what to look for and we can keep a look >> reporter: rest didn't appreciate the e at that sand bags but would like a permanent solution to the flooding problem. >> does mean something but it's kind of i'll be right back trying to heal a wound that's already been cut. you know. they could have done something preventive, they have not done anything influential to let us know that we're already safe. the creek also runs through san francisco park and palo alto. in palo alto, crews sets up sand bags. back in east palo alto, all residents can do is watch the rain forecast for tonight. back to a live picture here at bay here is road, the flood stage is 15 feet. we checked the water gauge a short time ago. the creek is only running at 3 feet right now so there is no danger. but with the heavy rains just beginning a little bit to the north of us, obviously, that's a waiting game right here now to see what happens to this creek later tonight. back to you. >> thanks, mark. >>> now t
